As we work with drywall in the Wilmington area we often
apply, remove or repair textured and popcorn ceilings. We make your old ceilings new again.
Here is a common problem that I come across fairly often. Fixing a cut out hole in a popcorn
ceiling is a 4 phase repair. First I square off the hole to the next stud. Then patch in the sheetrock, feather out
the seams and finally reapply popcorn texture to the ceiling. In this video you can see this process. Once the new
popcorn texture dries the ceiling is as good as new.
Texture or stipple ceilings were very popular 20 yrs ago. The problem is they catch a lot
of dirt and cobwebs. They often get stained, particularly when there is water leakage. For a clean and crisp
look we are often asked to remove the texture. Popcorn ceilings often peal away, water damage is often the
cause of needed ceilng repairs. Removing popcorn spray or textured ceiling is a labor intensive and very
messy undertaking. There are several methods of removing texture and repairing ceilings. Depending on how the
texture was applied and whether or not the ceiling has been painting over will determine which method should
be used. This ceiling was a particularly difficult. It had a heavy stipple and had been painted over with a
glossy paint. We had to scrape it down the best we could and then sand it smooth. We then skimmed out any
remaining imperfections and re-sanded in order to attain the new ceiling look we promise to
achieve.

Another alternative to removing texture on popcorn ceilings is
to paint over it. This can be done if the popcorn is not already peeling away. It requires me to inspect the
ceiling in order to determine its condition. A special roller and technique is used to then paint the
popcorn.
